My mom thinks if you have a mental illness than your crazy is this true?

My mom said I was crazy because I have a mental illness; Anixety/Depression.My mom thinks if you have a mental illness than your crazy is this true?
Your mom is suffering from a case of real ignorance. Anxiety/Depression is a chemical imbalance treatable with medication. My mom thinks if you have a mental illness than your crazy is this true?
I think your mom is wrong. If you go to a dentist to get a cavity done are you defective? ';Mental illness'; carries a stigma that could be something as simple as a chemical deficiency. If your blood stream is low on iron you get it your chemical deficiency treated right? It is the same thing.

There was a day when they bled people with leeches because it was ';advanced medicine';. I think the same backwards thinking is true of the stigma of ';mental illness';.

You are fine Chloe. Learn some coping tools and remove the stressors from your life. Get medicine if you must. You are fine and your mom is wrong.
anxiety and depression arent crazy......some illnesses are.....
I am sorry your mom said that to you.

It means your mother is not aware of what depression and anxiety are. Your doctor needs to talk to her explaining what it is like to be depressed or have anxiety.

Even if she was just joking, this is not funny.

Bring her to your next appointment.
OMG NO WAY! Hon, my mom was the same way. It's mostly because of the time in which they were raised. If you want more info, go to the Canadian Mental Health website; just google it.
your mother is crazy. for being so stupid. period . if your suffering from depression. it nothing to be ashamed off. every person goes through a period in there life's witch they cannot cope. it happens too every body.your mother is a very sad person. for saying such cruel things to you. thinking off you. good luck.
Crazy is a term that people use to put others down. Anxiety and depression are medicals problems and so are illnesses. I she felt bad she would not like to be called cazy.
this is a tricky issue. some people CAN help it and use these illnesses as a crutch because they cant or wont take responsiblity for themselves. Some people do develop mental illnesses as a result of chemical imbalance or a trauma, physical that is. and what is crazy? Its all relative. Some people think if you skydive you are crazy, (i do it and love it and i'm not crazy), but some people think is a normal thing to do.
no no no!

Can you function at all( i know total norm. is not reasonable)? Are you in school? I don't think just because you're ill means your crazyy. Would she say someone with the flu had no immune system? no, i'll bet not. Your mom is wrong.
';Crazy'; is just a derogatory term. Your mom is pretty thoughtless to say this. Many people suffer from depression and anxiety. Perhaps your mom believes there is some type of stigma associated with having this diagnosis. But she should keep these beliefs to herself. Work with your mental health professional to get relief from your symptoms. If your mom has upset you, mention this to the doctor; they may be able to talk with her and educate her.
No this isn't true at all. If you have a mental illness this doesn't mean your crazy. I too have depression, and anxiety. I take meds. for it and it is controlled.

GOod luck

Alabama
To most people that's the definition of the word, so yeah you're probably 'crazy'... 1st definition on dictionary.com is ';Mentally deranged';

It's got a bit of a negative connotation though. The word itself isn't bad, people just have a bad idea of it. Don't let it bug you.

Edit: Don't take this ^ the wrong way. The person below this is offering good advice (yet without REALLY answering your question)
NO!!! You mom is off base on this one..
Hon, you are not crazy. Like another poster said people from your mother's generation grew up learning that stereotype. She needs to be educated about your disorder and what it really is. And what that is is a disorder that can be managed with medication and regular therapy.

I've had a depressive disorder for many years which was caused by various traumas in my life and drug abuse. Now I take medication which has really helped. Once your Mother realizes that you can live just fine with meds and therapy and gets the education she needs about your problem she will most likely back off and treat you better. That was a rude thing for her to say though. Parents aren't perfect. They do make mistakes.
no your not crazy just chemically imbalanced. doctors give medicine to help with that. its very popular now a days. if she was right then have the world would be in hospitals for it. just look it up on webmd.com hopefully this will help answer some questions you might have.
Nope, crazy is just a prejudiced word.

Maybe your mother doesn't know how to handle things every now and then which apply to you and in a rage she called you crazy.
Most people suffer some kind of mental illness whether it be depression, or anxiety or both so for your mom to think that all people who suffer a mental illness is specifically crazy than no, i don't believe she is right. Think about this when was the last time you met someone who didn't have something wrong with them even therapist themselves have many problems, your normal and at least you are aware that you have anxiety/depression that makes you above normal.
Your mom sounds very out of date. Anxiety and Depression are both treatable. These types of problems often run in families and are passed down to the next generation. Try to find a therapist that specializes in teens with depression. I hope you feel better soon.Windy
