Is it true I need to learn how to be a puppy's mom?

With all your expertise you need to ask the ML? Hum......curious?Is it true I need to learn how to be a puppy's mom?
What makes me curious is why you would pick me as best answer? Any true trainer knows you are never to treat a dog as its ';mommy';

I am the pups master and trainer period. Treating a dog like a child only creates behavior problems. If I want more kids I'll adopt real ones. Dogs are animals and should be treated and cared for as such.

not completely, just very gentle and kind to it, as if you were the mother
You do not need to be a puppy's mom in order to provide it a good home which requires a safe place to sleep and play, nutritious food and proper training. What is important during training is that you show the puppy as it grows up and starts it's training is that you hold the alpha position. That way it will be submissive towards you and anyone else higher then him in the pecking order. It is important to get this established earlier in the puppy's life however you don't need to be rough or mean to the puppy to teach him his place.
Hmm... not mother, entirely... The leader and authority figure, yes.

Domestic dogs are happier and healthier if their owner is the pack leader -- with rules of interaction set, pack structure, clear expectations. The Monks of New Skete have several excellent books on the market for dog training, as well as a show on Animal Planet right now.
Only if the puppy's mom has passed away....
