My mom says its not good to be on the computer when its thundering is that true?

Well, it isn't really dangerous. However, if the power were to go out or there was a power surge, this could damage your PC.

I would advise you to turn off and unplug all expensive electric appliances during a thunder storm.

The people at www.computalk.net will be able to give you more help.My mom says its not good to be on the computer when its thundering is that true?
It's not the thunder that is dangerous, it is the lightning.

And it actually depends on where the power lines are located in your neighborhood. In some locations, the power lines are underground and in other locations, they are above ground. Anything above ground can be hit by lightning. And the lightning can create a large amount of current that can travel along wires into your home.

In my neighborhood, we have electicity, telephone, high speed internet and cable television above ground mounted on tall poles. So during a lightning storm in my neighborhood, it would be wise not to be touching anything connected to an electrical outlet, or the telephone line, or the incoming cable television and internet line.

So don't use a computer that is connected to an electrical outlet during a lightning storm. And even if you use a battery laptop that is wired to the telehone connector, that is also unsafe. The only computer connection that should be safe is to use a portable laptop on battery power, with a wireless connection to the internet.

Using a cell phone inside of a building should also be safe since there is no wire connection to the outside. My mom says its not good to be on the computer when its thundering is that true?
It's possible. The lightning could hit the phone lines or the power cord and zap the computer. Best thing is to get a surge protector for the power cord and things should be okay, but as for phone lines... (who uses them in computers anymore anyways?)

I had my laptop on without being plugged into a surge protector and my apartment got hit by lightning, knocking out the power. It fried the motherboard on my laptop, which cost a lot of money to repair. It's just better to be safe than sorry.
That is a true statement. Lightning can cause the most unexpected damage. I knew of a client that had to replace $18,000 worth of computer equipment all because lightning struck a nearby power pole and the surge came through a telephone modem wire and started a fire in their server room.

It can and does happen. UPS protection offers a layer of protection but I would just turn it off.
Yeah. If you are working on something or playing something the thunderstorm can knock out power lines. Also when the power lines knock out and you don't have a surge protector your computer can be damaged.
